Workshops

Workshops are currently being offered in Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Productivity Council. See HK Training Online for details and registration. Courses begin in April 2008.

Seminars

These workshops enable software developers to use open source software to create next generation, standards based web applications. The featured technology includes many of the cornerstones of the web 2.0 and online social network phenomenon. These online applications are characterized by rich interfaces which allow people to connect and share information simply. Tim O’Reilly, who coined the term web 2.0, described it as:

Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform. Chief among those rules is this: Build applications that harness network effects to get better the more people use them. (This is what I’ve elsewhere called “harnessing collective intelligence.”)

As the power of the web to bring people together increases, smart businesses use the web to reach further and more effectively to their customers and integrate the principles of openness, agility and participation into their internal organization. While the web 2.0 term is bandied about to the point of absurdity, the reality is these innovations – both in technology and business practice – have tangible results that improve our effectiveness and lives. These workshops espouse and share these principles.

Highlights include:

  • The latest developments and most recent revisions of web 2.0 technologies
  • Practical uses of open source software in ways that improve software design and lower costs
  • An emphasis on agile software development processes
  • Tying technology directly to business needs and strategy

JadeTower Seminars are half-day events which complement our workshops by providing a business and industry context to the technical content. We work with many partners to present these forums which are often free to the public. If you’d be interested in scheduling a seminar for your business, user group, or students, please contact us. Additionally, we invite other professionals to partner with us in sharing this cutting edge information with the community.

Workshop Format

Each course is designed for 3 full days of instruction. Classes are presented in English and feature hands-on examples and tutorials. Attendees are provided full copies of presentation materials. Some classes feature additional attendee gifts such as a copy of the latest book on the subject matter.

Seminars are shorter, instructor lead presentations. These can be scheduled for half-day or full-day events and complement the workshop series by providing business strategy and policy guidelines for engineers and managers alike.

Facility Requirements

Attendees should have access to individual computer workstations or should bring a laptop to the event. Instructors will provide all software to run on Windows or Apple OS X operating systems; however, attendees should have access to the internet during the duration of the workshop.
